GALVESTON, Texas (AP) — Engineering work will begin for restoring Galveston's only public boat ramp that was among sites damaged by Hurricane Ike.
The 61st Street ramp, a popular site for free access to the bay, needs repairs due to the Sept. 13 hurricane.
Galveston County parks director Dennis Harris says more than half of the county-managed boat ramps and piers are damaged or inaccessible because of Ike.
The Galveston County Daily News reported Wednesday that county officials say it will be 2010 before the ramp area and adjacent park are fully functional.
Harris estimates it would cost at least $302,000 to repair and enhance the boat ramp side, plus $120,000 to rebuild Washington Park.
Federal and state funds could be used.
County commissioners last week approved the engineering work.
