Who killed J.W. Jarrott?

The first recorded murder on the South Plains of Texas happened when Lubbock lawyer J.W. Jarrott was shot and killed while watering his team of horses near the present-day community of Ropesville on Aug. 27, 1902. An earlier killing in Dickens misses the distinction because a judge ruled it wasn’t murder at all.

Floyd Tillman, The Influencer

They called Country Music Hall of Fame singer, songwriter and guitarist Floyd Tillman “The Influence” because he influenced the better part of two generations of Texas musicians. He was one of the first country musicians to play the electric guitar, one of the first to write and record a cheating song, and his offbeat vocals and leads heavily influenced Willie Nelson and others.

Quanah Parker’s Star House

Quanah Parker made himself a respected Comanche chief, but Dan and W.T. Waggoner made him a celebrity. Quanah used his connections with the Waggoners and other Texas cattle barons to better the lives of his people, but the dealings also made him a star and helped finance the finest house in the Indian Territory of present-day Oklahoma.
