The Bonds-Fisher Feud

On a hot August day in 1926, a man named Wiley Fisher parked his car in front of Eads Undertaking Parlor in downtown Belton after he and his wife attended a viewing of a neighbor who had died in a car wreck. Fisher went to the passenger side to help his wife into the car just as Albert Bonds pulled up in a Model T and opened fire with a shotgun.

The Republic of the Rio Grande

Not to get too picky with the Six Flags folks, but part of Texas actually served under seven flags. An area in Webb County was, for a brief time, under the flag of the Republic of the Rio Grande, a dream of Mexican Federalists who broke with Mexican Centralists in 1839. Laredo was the capital of the republic.

J.O. Langford’s Hot Springs

J.O. Langford was sickly and despairing when he made his way from Midland to Alpine in 1909. Langford was from Mississippi, where he suffered his first bout of malaria. Frequent bouts with the disease followed him to Texas and was the reason he was in Alpine. He thought the arid West Texas air might be good for him.

One day back in the early 1950s, FBI agents trailed Las Vegas gambler and mobster Benny Binion and the driver of his Cadillac, a man known as Gold Dollar, across two states and straight to Willie Lusk’s boot shop at the corner of Avenue A and 17th Street in Lubbock.

Grace Danforth wasn't the kind of person we would expect to die from an accidental drug overdose. Not only was she an educated, articulate and outspoken proponent of women's rights and a member of the Christian Temperance Union, but Danforth was also one of the most respected doctors in 19th century Texas.
