Deaf Smith, The Texas Spy

A native New Yorker named Erastus Smith was on his way back to his home in San Antonio in 1836 when members of Santa Anna’s Mexican army accosted him and his son-in-law, Hendrick Arnold. Smith had been away on a hunting trip and didn’t know the Texians, that group of rabble rousers dedicated to independence from Mexico, were about to lay siege to his adopted hometown.

Unsung Heroes of Indian Wars Were ... Indians?

The unsung heroes of the Indian wars in Texas were ... Indians. Specifically, Indian scouts. It’s fair to say Texas would have fought Quanah Parker’s Comanches on the Llano Estacado for another decade or more without the services of the scouts. Many a soldier and Ranger lived to tell a tale because the scouts kept them out of trouble, rescued them from trouble, or both.
